Photoshoot prep tips
#couplegoals
With Valentine's around the corner, I've been inspired by all of the love I've captured in my photoshoots. You and your partner are the ones who have the connection and it's my job to find that during our time together. Here are a few things to think about prior to your photoshoot.
I speak to at least one person in the family before we get together on the day of the session. During that time I ask a few questions to get to know you and your relationship. This helps set the tone for the day. I'll ask questions about where you met, what you like about each other, and places that mean the most to you. There is something special about capturing people in a location that they both love or feel connected to by a memory. If you love where you are, you'll love how you feel.
Dressing for the photo shoot is also just as important. Even for the most casual couple, having outfits that coordinate, not match, is what makes you two shine in the photos. A maxi dress silhouette brings sleekness and power to a woman. Dark jeans and a pressed shirt (t-shirt or button down) gives your partner a relaxed, yet refined look. Styling can take some time, but most people have what they need in their closets. Based on where the photo location is can lead us to figuring out the look for your images. I'll work with you on your style prior to the session so you feel the most confident you can.
The time of day can create the mood for your photos. I prefer to photograph towards sunset to get that afternoon golden light, yet, I understand schedules don't always allow for that timing. Ideally, a photoshoot can be during the week when locations aren't as crowded, and you can be as free as you'd like because no one is watching. However, as much as we plan ahead, fog is always a factor in San Francisco. Actually, fog is beautiful to photograph in because you can shine against the gray backdrop. The lighting during a foggy day doesn't have as many limitations and you can get a good photograph anytime of the day.
These are just a few of the prep tips I offer to help you create the mood, set the tone, and prepare for a fun time shooting together.
Check out these photos of Chelsey and Casey which were taken at Sutro Baths in San Francisco just before the pandemic shut everything down. Chelsey was 8 months pregnant (the perfect time for maternity photos) and Casey wasn't going to say no. They were dream clients that chose a dream location. From their outfit coordination, complimenting their eyes, their style, and the scenery, the session flowed naturally. We ended with the sunset and a lovely set of photos that beautifully capture their love and connection.
