One of the reasons I love photographing celebrations in Napa Valley is that the landscape becomes part of the story.
Aman's birthday took place in mid-November, when the vineyards at Clos du Val were still holding onto the rich colors of late harvest. Rows of vines glowed with shades of gold and orange, creating a stunning contrast against the moody gray skies that drifted overhead throughout the afternoon. Every so often, the sun would peek through the clouds, adding just enough warmth to the scene.
As we explored the property, one vineyard row quickly became the star of the show.
Using the vines as a natural runway, Aman and each of her friends took turns walking, posing, laughing, and celebrating together. What started as a simple photo idea quickly became one of the most entertaining parts of the day. Each pair brought their own personality to the images, creating a collection of portraits that felt uniquely personal and full of life.
Looking back, those photographs are some of my favorites from the entire session.
Not because they were perfectly posed, but because they captured the spirit of the friendships being celebrated.
Another favorite moment happened near one of the winery's swings.
As Aman enjoyed a few moments on the swing, her friends gathered nearby, laughing, watching, and cheering her on. The resulting images perfectly captured the energy of the group—supportive, playful, and genuinely happy to be celebrating together.
Those moments are often impossible to plan.
While we created plenty of beautiful portraits throughout the day, some of the most meaningful images happened naturally. A shared laugh while walking through the vineyard. A spontaneous hug. Friends exchanging stories between photographs.
These candid moments added depth to the gallery and helped tell the complete story of the celebration - a girls weekend in wine country.
One thing became obvious very quickly: everyone loved having professional photographs taken together.
For many of these women, life is busy. Between careers, families, and living in different parts of California, opportunities to gather everyone in one place don't happen every day.
Having a dedicated photographer allowed them to fully enjoy the experience while knowing the memories were being preserved. Instead of worrying about selfies or asking strangers to take group photos, they were free to focus on what mattered most: spending time together.
The result was more than a collection of images.
It became a visual record of a milestone birthday, lifelong friendships, and a day that will be remembered long after the last bottle of wine was opened.
