San Francisco has no shortage of beautiful photo locations, but Tank Hill offers something especially memorable: sweeping city views without the crowds found at many of the better-known landmarks.
From the top of the hill, you can see downtown San Francisco, the East Bay, Sutro Tower, and even the Golden Gate Bridge. Turn in another direction, and the scenery changes completely, revealing the homes surrounding Buena Vista, the Mission, and the Inner Sunset.
It is a small location with an impressive number of possibilities—which is exactly why I love photographing families here.
Tank Hill gives us the opportunity to include recognizable San Francisco scenery without making the landmark the entire focus of the photograph.
The downtown skyline creates a beautiful backdrop for portraits, while the nearby rocks, trees, hillside, and neighborhood homes add texture and variety. I can photograph one family in several directions and create images that feel surprisingly different, even though we have only walked a short distance.
The natural rocks are especially fun for individual portraits of older children. They provide a place to lean, sit, or stand—and tend to bring out a little extra personality. Apparently, a good rock can do what repeated requests to “smile naturally” cannot.
Despite its dramatic views, Tank Hill feels relatively quiet and natural. Families can sit together on one of the benches, walk along the hill, or interact while the city stretches out behind them.
Those moments often lead to my favorite photographs: children leaning into their parents, siblings showing off a bit of personality, and families laughing together instead of concentrating on holding a perfect pose.
The location works particularly well for families with older children who can comfortably navigate the stairs, rocks, and uneven ground.
Parking near Tank Hill is generally easier than at many popular San Francisco photo locations, but reaching the top requires climbing stairs. There is no stroller-friendly route, and the paths and ground can be uneven.
The hillside also has steep, unfenced drop-offs. Young children need to remain close to their parents and follow directions throughout the session. For that reason, I recommend this location for families whose children are old enough to safely and comfortably explore the area.
Comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must. This is not the day for anyone to discover that their beautiful new shoes have absolutely no traction.
Tank Hill is exposed and can become quite windy, particularly later in the day. An early-morning session generally gives us calmer conditions, softer light, and fewer visitors.
Morning light also works beautifully with the downtown skyline and surrounding hills. Depending on the weather, we may get crisp city views, soft layers of fog, or a combination of both. As always in San Francisco, bringing a layer is a very good idea.
For families who are comfortable with a little climbing and want portraits that truly feel connected to San Francisco, Tank Hill is a spectacular choice.
If you’re considering a family photo session at Tank Hill or another San Francisco location, I’ll help you choose a setting that fits your family, your style, and the kind of photographs you want to create.
