From Generations to Frames: Extended Family Photo Sessions in the Bay Area

Uniting Through Photos: An Extended Family Photo Session

There’s something truly magical about gathering generations of family together in one frame. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, having a reunion, or simply cherishing the bonds that tie you together, a generational family photo session captures these priceless moments. Here’s how to make the most of your extended family session in the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area.

Picking the Perfect Location

The location of your family session sets the tone and provides the backdrop for your memories. If your home has enough space, it’s a fantastic option. Home sessions offer comfort, accessibility, and the convenience of breaks for snacks or bathroom use, especially helpful with kids and older adults. Utilizing your own furniture and surroundings can add a personal touch that makes the photos even more special.

If you prefer an outdoor location, consider a park or a scenic spot that holds significance to your family. Timing is crucial here—early mornings or late afternoons typically provide the best lighting and avoid the harsh midday sun. Think about spots where people can sit and relax between shots. Bring along portable chairs or blankets, and ensure everyone stays hydrated and comfortable. The Bay Area boasts numerous beautiful parks and beaches, so choose a location that resonates with your family's style and energy.

Coordinating Colors: Harmony in Every Hue

One of the keys to a stunning family photo is coordinating outfits. When everyone in your extended family is on the same page, it creates a cohesive and polished look. Think about the vibe you want to project—casual, formal, or somewhere in between. Choose a color palette that complements your family. Soft pastels, earthy tones, or even a classic black and white theme can work wonders. The idea is to pick 2-3 main colors and let everyone mix and match within those shades. Avoid overly busy patterns, and encourage family members to include one or two accessories that add personality without clashing. Remember, the goal is harmony without uniformity, showcasing each person’s individuality while creating a unified look.

This family chose to let the elderly grandparents stand out in red, as that was her signature color. Everyone else chose shades of blue. And it worked so well, as you can see from the palette used in the photos.

Crafting Your Shot List: Every Combination Counts

An organized shot list is your best friend during an extended family session. Plan ahead to make sure you capture every meaningful combination of family members. Start with the big group shots, and then break it down into smaller units. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Whole extended family
  • Grandparents with all the grandkids
  • Individual family units
  • Siblings of one generation
  • All the men, then all the women
  • Just the couples
  • Each grandchild with their grandparents
  • Special one-on-one moments (like a mom and daughter or dad and son)

A detailed list of photos ensures that no one is left out and that the session runs smoothly. It also helps manage the time effectively, ensuring everyone gets their moment in the spotlight without feeling rushed.

As your photographer, I assist with this shot list everytime in advance of the session. It's a complimentary part of the service I provide.
